The Short Answer

A single set of eyelash extensions can last up to 8 weeks, but that does not mean they will look pretty and well-kept for 8 weeks. Just that you will have some extensions on still. For the fullest, most natural-looking result, you should come in for a fill every 3 to 3.5 weeks. If you want that just-left-the-salon look at all times, booking a fill every 2 weeks keeps you looking flawless. For most people, 3 weeks hits the sweet spot between a full set and a fresh fill. If you decide not to keep them maintained it is best to have them removed around 4 weeks to prevent damage with lashes growing out, twisting, or snagging.

Why Lashes Don't Last Forever (Even With Great Application)

Eyelash extensions are applied to your individual natural lashes, and natural lashes grow and shed just like the hair on your head- just at a much faster rate. Your natural lash cycle typically runs 6-8 weeks (up to around 11 for some) , which means:

• Some lashes with extensions attached will naturally shed as part of your growth cycle

• New natural lashes without extensions will grow in

• Over time, this creates gaps that make a fill necessary — Not because they weren't done well, but because your lashes are in a constant cycle of growing & shedding.

This is completely normal and happens to every client, regardless of who does their lashes. Do note that this should happen over weeks- not days.

What Actually Affects Retention

Two very different things affect how long your lashes last, and it's important not to confuse them.

Immediate retention (the first few days) comes down entirely to the artist. This means correct isolation of each individual natural lash, the right amount of adhesive, proper bonding/cure time, and a quality adhesive. When lashes are applied correctly, they form a genuinely strong mechanical bond around your natural lash. That bond isn't going to break down from a little oil on your skin or normal daily life. Realistically, the only things that will make properly applied extensions come off within days are:

• Pulling or picking at the extensions

• Rubbing your eyes

• Over-brushing to the point of feeling tugging

• Using a dedicated chemical adhesive remover

If none of those are happening and your lashes are still coming off in the first week, that means it comes down to how they were applied or the adhesive used — not something you did. Your artist should be offering to fix them for you (of course, within an appropriate time frame/when the schedule allows), they should not automatically accuse you. Even then, the issue is due more to clogged follicles and oil glands rather than making extensions pop off.
